Every minute counts in a medical emergency, and this will ensure we can provide more coverage to the Vale of Evesham and its surrounding villages. After a rigorous selection process, we chose a Dacia Duster as the base vehicle. The event was carried out in a fun and interactive way, whilst also expressing how important it is to be able to carry out effective and early CPR in the event of a cardiac arrest. The event also fitted in with the WI ‘Bystanders Can be Lifesavers’ campaign, which calls on WI members to work together to increase public confidence and training in the delivery of CPR. On Saturday 27th September, the staff held a charity bake sale which attracted both their customers and passing members of the public, with lots of scrummy cakes and tray bakes on offer. They even had a banner made, and t-shirts with our charity logo. Five members of the Vale of Evesham Community First Responders also went along on the day to chat to members of the public and answer any question they may have had. A great time was had by everyone, in spite of it being rather chilly on the day. Altogether, the event raised a fantastic amount of £494 for our charity. CPR was carried out (on a training dummy!) during the entire time the show was open over two days, with teams of people taking turns to carry out two minutes of CPR each. Passers by were also encouraged to take part, many of them admitting they had never tried CPR before. Reflecting on the show James Devonshire from the Emergency Services Times later said “Having done my two minutes, I was surprised by just how hard you have to push to perform CPR properly - and by how much a chest cavity depresses during the process. It was a sobering reminder that this is both a vital and physically demanding skill”. This wasn’t just about keeping chest compressions going hour after hour, it was about showcasing how far we’ve come, and how we can keep pushing survival rates higher.
